API tiers: same data, more capacity
The BotOrNot JSON API and MCP server stay free and open. Paid keys raise the rate limits and allow commercial use without attribution. Every tier gets the same data, and responses never contain ads.

Using a key

- You can also send the key as x-api-key. The MCP endpoint (/mcp) accepts the same headers.
- GET /api/key shows your tier and today’s usage.
- Over a limit, you get HTTP 429 with Retry-After. Without a key, you’re on the free tier.
- Keys are shown once. We store only a SHA-256 hash, so we can rotate a key but never show it again.
